Summer school “Power of viral vectors in gene therapy and basic science” will be organized in Croatia by Croatian Microbiological Society in collaboration with French Society for Cell and Gene Therapy, German Society for Gene Therapy and Spanish Society for Cell and Gene therapy. This is not the first event organized on viral vector subject in Croatia. In 2008 Croatian Microbiological Society successfully organized FEMS supported workshop “Adenoviruses basic biology to gene therapy”, Zadar, Croatia. This time Summer school will be focused on viral vectors development. The intention of this summer school is to gather PhD students and young postdocs working on different viral vectors, but others who would like to participate are warmly welcome. Since in November 2012, the European Commission has granted marketing authorization for the first gene-therapy medicine based on adeno-associated virus, it is clear that viral vectors are key agents in the development of new gene-therapy products. However, strong research base in virology is essential starting point to further develop viral vectors efficacy and safety. The aim of this summer school is to help to develop a cadre of young scientist able to push forward this propulsive field of science. In addition, it will provide an opportunity for PhD students and young postdocs to discuss in detail their research with experts in the field as well as with each other. Participants will also have time for informal chats with the experts after the evening sessions and during the trip that will be organized on the third day. Topics to be covered will include viral vectors based on adenoviruses, retroviruses, adeno-associated viruses and herpes viruses and their use in gene therapy, vaccination and basic science.
