Dear colleagues,

It is our great pleasure to invite you to the 5th Croatian Congress of Microbiology with International Participation to be held in Primošten, Croatia, on September 26-30, 2012.

We continue the twenty-year-long tradition of fruitfull meetings with intresting sessions covering all major topics of microbiology. The Congress will include two plenary (keynote) lectures, sessions with two introductory invited lectures, oral and poster presentations, as well as extra time devoted to the scientific achievements of young scientists, the recipients or ex-recipients of FEMS research fellowships.

The group of Sophien Kamoun at The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL), John Innes Centre, Norwich, UK, studies effector biology in filamentous plant pathogens, particularly oomycetes such as the Irish famine organism Phytophthora infestans.

Main fields of interest: adenovirus biology – role of integrins in adenovirus entry and adenovirus retargeting through insertion of short peptides into HI-loop of adenovirus fiber protein, integrin mediated drug resistance in cancer cells.

Saskia Hogenhout’s overall research objectives are to gain a better understanding of the molecular basis of the interactions between sap-feeding insects of the order Hemiptera (aphids, leafhoppers and planthoppers) and plants, and how microbial pathogens/symbionts may influence these interactions.

Prof. Daslav Hranueli has got his BSc, MSc and PhD from the University of Zagreb and spent several years as a research fellow at the Universities of Oxford, Wales and Kaiserslautern where he specialised in traditional and molecular genetics, as well as in bioinformatics.

Associate professor in Food Hygiene at the Veterinary and Pharmaceutical University Brno, food microbiologist and  head of the Czech reference laboratory for listeria at the National Institute of Public Health.

Annette Mankertz

Annette Mankertz works with viruses inducing the childhood diseases measles, mumps and rubella (MMR). As Head of the National Reference Centre MMR she cooperates closely with the ECDC and the WHO, and her lab serves as one of three WHO Regional Reference Labs in Europe. In 2011, Annette Mankertz has been appointed the Head of Unit “Viral infections” and Deputy Head of the “Department of Infectious Diseases” in RKI.

Till now she has published 65 papers on international peer-review journals, she is co-inventor of 4 patents on anti-infective molecules and she has contributed to national and international congresses and schools with more than 100 oral communications, poster, seminars and conferences.

Ferenc Rozgonyi

Ferenc Rozgonyi is a professor at the Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary. He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles, 16 congress proceedings, 52 book chapters and 5 books.

Vladimir Savic
Vladimir Savić

Croatian Veterinary Institute, Zagreb, Croatia

Vladimir Savić received DVM and MS degrees from the Veterinary Faculty in Zagreb and a PhD from the Faculty of Science in Zagreb. He is an avian virologist and works at the Croatian Veterinary Institute where he is the head of the Poultry Centre.

Angela Sessitsch is a Bioresources Unit Head at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH. Her main research interest is to better understand how bacterial endophytes interact with plants with the aim to develop applications based on beneficial plant-microbe interactions.
