Power of Microbes in Industry and Environment 2013

This symposium which covers practically all topics of applied microbiology is already the fourth in a row, starting with the meeting in Opatija in 2002 and followed by the symposia in Zadar in 2007 and Malinska (island Krk) in 2010. Like the previous meetings, the one next year will be organized by the Croatian Microbiological Society and co-organized by several other European microbiological societies, promoting the collaboration among microbiologists in Central Europe and broader. The experience of the past meetings motivated our efforts to continue with this series with a clear tendency to include new societies and strengthen the scientific connections among research groups of neighboring countries.

Vth International Conference on Molecular Mechanisms of Fungal Cell Wall Biogenesis

The meeting with the intention to gather life scientists of different profiles dealing with biosynthesis, secretion, structural and functional modifications and incorporation of different fungal cell wall components in a complex, sophisticated "outermost cellular compartment", has become a tradition since the first meeting organized in Ascona, Switzerland in 2001.
Central European Symposium on Antimicrobials and Antimicrobial Resistance CESAR 2012

This Symposium differs from the previous three CESARs in scope and topics of the program. The program of CESAR 2012 is extended with the topics complementary to the antimicrobial resistance.
5th Croatian Congress of Microbiology with International Participation

We continue the twenty-year-long tradition of fruitfull meetings with intresting sessions covering all major topics of microbiology. The Congress will include two plenary (keynote) lectures, sessions with two introductory invited lectures, oral and poster presentations, as well as extra time devoted to the scientific achievements of young scientists, the recipients or ex-recipients of FEMS research fellowships.

Scientists combine bird and swine flus to create mutant airborne virus
Researchers in China have created a batch of designer viruses by selectively combining genes from the H5N1 bird flu virus with those of the H1N1 swine flu strain. This reassortment process — which can happen naturally in nature — resulted in several hybridized strains that were able spread through the air and infect mammals.
