Mycoplasma PhD opportunity

18.11.2011. Novosti

International Livestock Research Institute seeks to recruit a PhD student to join the Mycoplasma research group in February 2012.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) helps reduce poverty, hunger and environmental degradation by enhancing animal agriculture in developing countries, working in partnership with organisations in developing countries.

CBPP (Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia), caused by Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides and present in more than 25 countries of sub-Saharan Africa is an economically important livestock disease in Africa. This PhD project aims to apply synthetic biology tools to identify and characterise Mycoplasma mycoides molecules and evaluate their function in virulence as well as for their suitability for vaccine development. The project will be carried in close collaboration with scientists at the J Craig Venter institute in Rockville, USA and INRA in Bordeaux, France.

  • Department: Mycoplasma research group
  • Location: Nairobi, Kenya
  • Duration: 3-year term

Remdesivir and chloroquine effectively inhibit the recently emerged novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in vitro
Our findings reveal that remdesivir and chloroquine are highly effective in the control of 2019-nCoV infection in vitro. Since these compounds have been used in human patients with a safety track record and shown to be effective against various ailments, we suggest that they should be assessed in human patients suffering from the novel coronavirus disease.

Probiotics are mostly useless and can actually hurt you
Probiotics are living micro-organisms that are taken by millions of people to boost their microbiome or to restore their gut ecosystem after a dose of antibiotics. Yet questions remain about whether they actually work.
